Q&A
What part of your work gives you the most satisfaction?
I enjoy being the person who can make something that feels complicated a little easier. Whether it’s helping someone navigate a fund transfer or making a beneficiary update feel less daunting, I find a lot of satisfaction in those small moments when I can make someone’s day just a little smoother. And, of course, it’s always nice to know that the extra effort is noticed and appreciated!
What is a lesson you’ve learned that has shaped your professional approach?
Growing up between Japan and the U.S. taught me the value of listening—really listening. I’ve learned that sometimes the best way to understand what someone needs is to pay attention not only to what they say, but also to what they don’t say. I’m naturally more of a listener than a talker, but over the years I’ve also learned to speak up and share my perspective. My different cultural experiences have given me a unique lens, and I’ve come to appreciate that my voice can be just as valuable as my ability to listen.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Most weekends you'll find me spending time with my husband, Jesse and our son, Kazuki. We love discovering new restaurants, catching a movie, and exploring together. I also love staying active and curious: tennis, running and yoga; and wandering through art exhibits, museums, and galleries are some of my favorite ways to spend a day.
What is your favorite travel destination?
That’s a tough one—it’s a tie between Hawaii and Japan. I was born in Japan and grew up in Hawaii, so both places feel like home in very different ways. Hawaii is my place to relax, reconnect with childhood friends, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and, of course, eat amazing food. Japan is a different kind of adventure. I love returning to see family and friends and introducing my husband and son to the places that shaped me. Showing them around when they don’t speak Japanese can make for a slightly less relaxing vacation—but it’s always worth it!
What is a hidden talent or fun fact about you?
I’m a serious chocolate enthusiast. I love trying chocolate from different shops and brands whenever I travel. One of my all-time favorites is Läderach's dark chocolate with crushed blackberries. But I’m not above a Trader Joe’s dark chocolate-covered cherry when the craving strikes. There is always a good reason for chocolate!
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or historical, who would it be?
Without hesitation, my mom. She passed away a few years ago, and I would love the chance to spend one more evening hearing her stories. She lived an extraordinary life—from growing up in postwar Japan with very little, to meeting my dad while traveling in Hong Kong, moving to Hawaii, and eventually spending her later years in Milan. As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate just how much wisdom, resilience, and adventure she carried with her. I think we'd spend hours talking, laughing, and probably wishing we had just a little more time.
